MAY 2006 DISTRICT 1 REPORT:
Andy Argenio, District I Vice President
The Discover Flying R/C Club
located at Marston Mills on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, had
its annual Frost Fly on January 1, 2006. In spite of the snow
showers, the event was a tremendous success with nonstop flying
all day. The many smiling faces tell the story.
THE DISCOVER Flying Radio Control
Club is one of District I’s many popular clubs that sponsor
numerous activities including fun-flys, cookouts, competitions,
and International Miniature Aircraft Association (IMAA) events
each year.
This club’s success is the result
of great leadership and a willingness of club members to contribute
their time in planning, running, and participating in the club
activities.
Many of the club members travel
several hours to and from my hobby shop and I have come to find
them the most passionate and enthusiastic group of aeromodelers,
always looking for cutting-edge RC products and projects to
undertake.
How many clubs could pull off a
successful event in the middle of winter in New England? My
friend Carl Vogel, the president of Discover Flying R/C, sent
the following report on the club’s Frost Fly.
“A dusting of snow the night before
and snow showers throughout the day didn’t prevent the 75 people
who braved the cold to join us for our club’s biennial hosting
of this year’s Frost Fly. For the first time in its more than
30-year history, this was an AMA-sanctioned event.
“Many of our friends from the Otis
club joined us as did a contingent from the Wingbusters club
in Middleboro, Massachusetts. Several came from Martha’s Vineyard.
“We had a large assortment of food.
Chili is a tradition and was supplied by Dick Manning and Chris
and Matthew Atti along with corn bread, salads, brownies, cookies,
and more. Tony Fajo cranked up his grill contributing burgers,
dogs, and linguica.
“This was a terrific event and
if you missed it you truly missed a great one.
“This event is hosted alternately
by our club in Hyannis and our sister club, the Otis Model Aero
Club, at its field in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Next year the
event will be at the Otis club so put it on your calendar. It’s
always great fun and camaraderie.”
Thanks, Carl, for this event report and the efforts of all
those who have contributed to making this a major winter event
that attracts fliers from the entire northeast district.
